Main identification characters
Whitish green to dark green, this alga consists of hard, disklike, calcified segments connected by flexible joints; grows 10-20 cm tall; and spreads laterally with dense random branching to form extensive clumps or mounds with many points of attachment.

Interaction with other species
Halimeda spp. are very robust and not easily harmed by algae eating animals - only a few species of fish feed on them. This is due to the plant excreting toxic metabolites.
Distribution   {MSG_BIOLOGY_LISTE_CATEGORIES}
Habitat

Coral

Sand
H. opuntia grows in the shallow waters of the coral reef, on sand and gravel and in Thalassia beds down to 25 meters deep.
Geographical distribution
Indo-Pacific and Caribbean to depth of 25 meters.
