Habitat

Coral
Occurs in seaward reefs. Usually over rocky or coral substrates, at boulder-strewn slopes at the base of high-island cliffs where it may occur in large schools.
Geographical distribution
Indo-pan-Pacific: East Africa south to Durban, South Africa and east Panama, north to the Ryukyu and Hawaiian Is., south to Shark Bay and the southern Great Barrier Reef and Tuamotu Is.; throughout Micronesia.

Eastern Pacific: ranges from the Gulf of California to the Galapagos Is.
