Colonies généralement denses et gazonnantes. Petits individus (Ascidiozoïdes) de 8 à 10 mm de haut, comportant 6-8 rangs de fentes. Les clavelines naines peuvent être de couleur blanche ou jaune, translucides. Elles sont fixées au rocher par de petits pédoncules.

Il y a au moins 3 espèces du genre en Méditerrannée. Deux à trois fois plus petite que sa cousine « claveline » transparente, la claveline naine ne présente que 8 rangées de fentes branchiales.

Les ascidies ont un mode de reproduction sexuée, mais les clavelines se multiplient aussi par bourgeonnement. A la base des individus se trouvent des stolons tubulaires, qui rampent sur le substrat et se reproduisent, formant ainsi des colonies.
