Huître commune localement. Cette huître mesurant entre 10 et 30 cm.

La valve gauche est fixée par un byssus au substrat (rocher, gorgone, corail noir) dans des endroits exposés de la zone sublitorale. Les deux valves de la coquille s'imbriquent suivant une ligne en zigzag très prononcée et sont de couleur brun-pourpre avec des bords violets. Elle est souvent recouverte par des éponges. La partie intérieure des valves est nacrée.
