Animal composé d'un disque central (2-3 cm de diamètre)polygonal portant autour de la bouche 5 bras (symétrie rayonnée d'ordre 5) mobiles, de nombreuses fois ramifiés.
Le disque est couvert de plaques calcaires. Les bras sont recouvert de piquants en grappins permettant l'accrochage au substrat. Ils sont dépourvus de pédicellaires, ils sont dotés de 2 rangs de podia servant d'organe olfactifs et gustatifs.
La bouche est ventrale, en fente étoilée à 5 branches, bordée de pièces calcaires servant de dents.

C'est un animal microphage, filtreur (passif) à l'aide des podias, avec ses bras déployés en éventail. Il se nourrit principalement de particules organiques ou de microorganismes planctoniques.

Vit surtout accroché aux gorgones ou aux spongiaires, mais se rencontre également sur les fonds de sable ou de vase, en général entre 50 et 800 m de profondeur, plus rarement vers les 30 m.
