Les mâles territoriaux sont entourés d'un harem, où règne une stricte hierarchie. A la disparition du mâle dominant, il se produit en quelques jours une inversion sexuelle chez la femelle dominante, qui devient mâle et laisse sa place de femelle dominante.

Le dimorphisme sexuel est très prononcé : Les femelles sont orange, presque uniforme, avec une larme violacée sous l'oeil. Les mâles, plus grands et plus colorés, ont le troisième rayon de la dorsale prolongée par une "antenne".
