Les clavelines ou clochettes de cristal font parties de la famille des ascidies. Ce sont des chordés car leur larve est dotée d'une chorde, précurseur de la colonne vertébrale.

Ce sont des animaux transparents avec un marquage blanc prononcé des orifices (ou siphons), mesurant de un à deux centimètres.

Les clavelines peuvent former des colonies pouvant compter jusqu’à trois cent individus !
