Le lanice est un ver segmenté qui peut mesurer jusqu'à 30 cm. L'extrémité visible au dessus du sol ne dépasse pas 5 cm, formant un petit arbre formé de grains de sable.

L'animal, qui n'est normalement pas visible, à un corps de couleurs variées (rose, jaunâtre, brunâtre, blanchâtre ou verdâtre). A l'avant, en plus de nombreux tentacules blancs, il a trois paires de branchies rouge vif.

Il peut former des populations très denses connues sous le nom de "gazon à lanices".

C'est un ver filtreur. Les filaments ramifiés du tube servent à filtrer le plancton et les particules en suspension.

Les sexes sont séparés; les produits génitaux sont émis dans l'eau où la fécondation a lieu. Il y a un stade larvaire planctonique. La larve s'entoure déjà d'une gaine de mucus garnie de détritus. Le stade planctonique dure environ 60 jours. Lorsque le jeune ver se pose sur le fond, il mesure de 2 à 3 mm de long.
